Bowker
Biography:
Adolph Steines

Adolf Steines belongs in the highest echelon of German master
metal smiths. He was born into a metal working family in Trier,
Germany in 1935. At 20 he earned the diploma of Master Blacksmith.
He continued his studies in Venice, Italy and also studied
design and architecture at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart,
Germany. At 28 he opened his own metal studio in Bekond, Germany,
where he created contemporary and traditional works in iron
and bronze. Perhaps the most famous among these is the portal
to the Royal Palace in Saudi Arabia.
His many awards include: the Annual Artisan Craftsman Prize
from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1961, the Annual
Artisan Craftsman Prize of the city of Trier in 1984, and
the Award for Contemporary Blacksmithing at the International
Blacksmithing Exhibition in Lindau, Germany in 1984.
His book, Metall-Treiben, now in its 4th edition, has been
translated into English under the title Moving Metal. Here
he presents many beautiful examples of his art including techniques,
tools, and materials in clear detail, which a novice can understand
and follow. There is, however, a wealth of information on
refined techniques and tricks of the trade, born out of decades
of experience, which will surprise and stimulate even the
expert. Methodically laid out, the text gives in detail all
the instructions essential for the artist of repoussé,
whether blacksmith, jeweler, silversmith, or sculptor. Profusely
illustrated, this work covers design and design transfer,
chasing, repoussé, sinking, raising, and surface treatment
in great detail.
