Biography:
Barbara Sternig
Barbara
Sternig had an idyllic childhood, as one of eight children
of a conservative elementary school principal in the leafy
Chicago suburb of Glencoe, Illinois. Dad insisted that all
of his brood be well educated and well behaved. Barbara complied,
graduating with honors not only from Dads grade school, but
also with a blue ribbon and second in her class from a strict
Catholic girls boarding school.
Absolutely nothing in this background predicted Sternigs
future. But a fifth grade project - the production of a class
magazine gave Barbara her first clue that a life in journalism
was much more exciting and was the life for her. She did her
first celebrity interview at age 14, grilling her favorite
Chicago rock and roll DJ, Wally Phillips of WGN Radio, for
her high school paper.
After gaining her journalism degree, the slim brunette began
her career at Chicagos great rock and roll radio station,
WCFL, where she met and mingled with the music greats of her
youth, and got thoroughly hooked on the fun of celebrities.
When her disk jockey boyfriend broke her heart, Sternig headed
outa town as far away as she could go - which just happened
to be Hollywood. Starting at all-news radio station KFWB,
Barbara soon landed a new job - legwoman/ writer/ producer
for pioneering TV Gossip Queen Rona Barrett. Here she not
only wrote Ronas syndicated Hollywood report which aired
on some 60 television stations nationwide, but also ghosted
Barretts byline fan magazine column every month, and into
the bargain developed a precious bookful of important inside
connections.
All this Sternig brought to the National Enquirers
Hollywood bureau, and within days, proved her ability to deliver
star interviews. For the next two decades, she brought to
the paper her own style of getting the job done, ending up
in the thick of endless celebrity mischief as a National
Enquirer Senior Reporter.
Her bold antics in pursuit of front page news for the Enquirer
earned Sternig the respect of her colleagues, many of whom
were battle-scarred veterans of Fleet Street. She circled
the globe several times while chasing the famous and infamous
on assignment.
Since leaving the Enquirer, she has been a regular
free-lance contributor to celebrity-oriented publications
and shows; and has also pursued her affinity for world travel,
including treks from Iceland to Africa to Arabia to the Amazon
and beyond. She shared these and other travel experiences
with listeners to L.A.s KMPC-AM and KLSX-FM Radio, where
she often guest-co-hosted a weekly travel and dining show.
She teaches a course in celebrity reporting at a local Los
Angeles college. Her second book of Hollywood adventures is
in the works.
Sternig is divorced and lives in Los Angeles.
