Biography:
Dale Walker
Dale
Walker was born in 1924 in Crystal City, Zavala County,
Texas. In the spring of 1930, his family moved on a farm
on the Nueces River seven miles north of Crystal City.
Dale was taught farming operations using teams of horses
to plant and cultivate with. The heavier work was done
with a 10-20 McCormick Deering tractor. Later, a small
International (culti-vision) tractor was purchased and
this little tractor was worth two or three teams of horses.
Dale graduated from High School in 1943 and early in 1944
he went to serve his country. He served in the European Theater
of Operations with the Air Communication System as a high-speed
radio operator. He communicated with outgoing and incoming
aircraft to their midpoint and from their midpoint of their
destination using International Morse Code.
Dale
married Ruth Powell January 1, 1946. After returning from
the service
late in 1946, they both returned to Crystal
City where Ruth went to work as a Laboratory and X-ray Technician
and Dale went into the service station business. He sold
the station after a year and went back into the business
he knew best. He started doing hay baling, plowing and all
sorts of custom farming. In 1970 they bought the home place
where they stock farmed to take up Dale's spare time. During
all this, they raised three beautiful children. Ruth and
Dale both retired in the 90's and are now living "happily
ever after" enjoying their children and grandchildren
and great grandchildren.
