Biography:
Derek Humphry
Derek
Humphry was born in Bath, Somerset, UK, in 1930. He spent
most of his working life as a journalist, latterly for the
London Sunday Times and the Los Angeles Times. He has authored
books on human rights issues, policing and civil liberties.
He founded the Hemlock Society USA in 1980 and the Euthanasia
Research & Guidance Organization in 1993.
"Jean's
Way," an account of how he helped his terminally ill
wife, Jean, to take her life to escape further suffering from
cancer, was a bestseller in the UK and Australia. His most
famous book is "Final Exit: The practicalities of Self-Deliverance
and Assisted Suicide for the Dying" (hardcover) which
in 1991 was a New York Times #1 bestseller for 18 weeks, and
topped the Publishers Weekly list of nonfiction bestsellers.
As a paperback (Delta Trade) it is now in its 3rd revised
edition.
Because
of the progressive, liberal views that he espouses, Derek
Humphry often has trouble finding a commercial publisher at
first. Final Exit (hardcover) was self-published. So he formed
the very small press, Norris Lane Press, to bring out 1st
editions or repeat editions of his older books
Humphry
lives near Eugene, Oregon, and is just completing his 12th
book, entitled "Beyond Final Exit: The Future of the
Right-to-Die Movement" for 2004.
