Biography:
Don McCormack
Don
McCormack. Former newspaper reporter and editor. Founded McCormack's
Guides in 1984. Publishes 11 relocation-newcomer guides to
metropolitan counties of California. Newspaper background:
cops, courts, planning, schools, politics. Graduate of UC
Berkeley. ³In my newspaper days, I ran into many people
who wanted useful information about where to live; hence the
guides. Our first 12,000 guides were purchased by Pacific
Bell and Chervon, which were relocating thousands of employees.
Our guides do not preach; they do not say one town is better
than another town. Rather, we present pertinent information
school scores, crime stats, community profiles, home
prices, weather and commuting, and more and let the
reader decide. Every spring and summer, I hop in my car and
drive Northern and Southern California to get a feel for what
is happening in the towns: what the housing looks like, whether
the potholes have been filled or the median strips planted
and pruned. Often you can gauge the energy of a city by how
well it does the little things. We pass this information on
to our readers, the great majority of whom are actively shopping
for a home, apartment or business location big decision.
For a while, my favorite place was a small neighborhood on
the Petaluma River in Northern California. The homes were
built over the water; you could fish off your porch. Alas,
the development was poorly planned. Silt filled the lagoon.
The fish swam off; the lawyers swam in. The moral: do your
research. It will often save you a lot of grief.²
