Bowker
Biography:
Douglas
D. Sparks
Doug
Sparks is a well known and well respected international speaker
and teacher. His work had taken him to more than ninety countries
in the world over the past thirty years. For nearly fifteen
years Doug lived in the Middle East, first in Egypt and then
on the island of Cyprus. He was the founder and director of
the Institute of Middle East Studies in Nicosia, Cyprus.
It was during his early years in Egypt that the seeds of the
book Rebekah were planted. In 1971 Doug was in Egypt
when a young girls body, about twelve years old, was found
floating in an irrigation canal. No one seemed particularly
concerned, there were some whispers but mostly shrugs of indifference.
Doug asked questions and finally was told that it was an honor
killing. In many Arab cultures if a young woman does something
that brings dishonor to the family, she is to be killed. Preferably
by one of her male family members, the death restores honor
to the family. The girl could be completely innocent, for
example if she was raped. She is still the one that has to
die.
Gender
abuse and inequality is not restricted to the Arab cultures.
It is also rampant in the western world and in particular
in the church. Rebekah challenges the historical
scriptural interpretations and offers a wonderfully new and
freeing view. This is one womans story but every womans
legacy.
