Bowker
Biography:
George Kohler
George
Kohler, national columnist and author of The Texan
(ISBN 0-9729518-0-6), was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1973.
He spent most of his childhood in central Idaho, exploring
old ghost towns and abandoned gold mines and listening to
the tales of Lewis and Clark, Jim Bridger, Chief Joseph, and
many other heroes and characters of western history. In this
environment he developed a love for the American West, its
history and legend, its fiction and the facts that were often
times even more entertaining.
After
graduating from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kohler joined
the United States Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman, serving
in a cardiac ICU at Bethesda, Maryland and spending two years
aboard an amphibious assault ship. He traveled the world in
his medical capacity, including Somalia and Haiti during those
brief conflicts. Kohler returned to Michigan after the Navy,
driving a truck over-the-road while he wrote his first novel.
Writing while he waited for loads, reworking and editing in
his spare time and on weekends, he finished the manuscript
in just over three months. Looking back on that period now,
Kohler says Writing became more and more important
to me, and driving quickly became a way to spend time fleshing
out my characters and planning out the plot. After
sending out the original draft to several agencies with little
success, Kohler expanded the story to include more of Sams
history with the Texas Rangers. His efforts were rewarded
when The Texan was accepted by El Paso City Books,
a small publishing house in Michigan.
Now
touring around the country to promote his book, Kohler still
writes humor for several national trade magazines. Im
the luckiest guy on earth he enthuses. I get
to spend every day doing something I love. The best part is
thinking I know just where the story is going and finding
out that the characters surprise even me sometimes!
Kohler
lives in the Ann Arbor area now with his wife and children.
Still driving occasionally to keep his hand in,
he spends his days writing and his spare time hunting, camping
and teaching two not-so small boys the joys of outdoor life.
His
next novel, LIBERATORS, is scheduled
for release next year.
