Biography:
Janet Benner, Ph.D.
Janet
Benner attended University of CA at Santa Barbara where she
earned a B.A. degree in psychology. Benner merited her Ph.D.
in Human Services Administration during her tenure as Executive
Director and co-founder of a residential program serving youthful
alcohol and drug abusers. She found that tobacco was the most
difficult addiction for the young people to overcome.
Drawing
in part from her own difficult quitting process Dr. Benner
changed her career focus to tobacco. She was appointed Director
of the Schick Center tobacco and weight loss programs in Santa
Barbara in 1984. Since that time she has helped hundreds of
people kick their nicotine habits.
In
response to a lack of material in the growing stream of people
seeking a solution to their enslavement to tobacco Dr. Benner
wrote Smoking Cigarettes: The Unfiltered Truth, Understanding
Why and How to Quit. Dr. Benner believes that access
to correct information is an important aid to people giving
up their nicotine habits. Smoking Cigarettes was
first published in 1987 and the thousands who read and benefited
from it led to the second edition published in 2003.
From
1992 until 2001 Dr. Benner was the Director of the Tri-County
Region tobacco education program, part of the highly successful
California Department of Health Services Tobacco Control Program.
In addition, she has written a protocol for developing and
implementing cessation programs.
Other
books by Dr. Benner include, Parent Survival Training:
A Guide for Parents of Teenagers and Football: Mysteries Revealed
for the Feminine Fan. She has also written several articles
and op-ed pieces, a screenplay, and numerous short stories.
She
is a mother of three and lives in Santa Barbara with her husband.
