Biography:
Mary Jane Bovo, M.D.
As
a doctor, writer and teacher, MJ Bovo believes that instead
of being victims, we all have the power within us to be
victors over all obstacles. We need to take responsibility
for the here and now, instead of blaming others. Dr. Bovo
believes that responsibility is a necessary ingredient
of both health and happiness and we make of our life what
we choose. In her private Manhattan practice she treats
the whole person and this positive approach to life is
reflected in her writing. Dr. Bovo has been writing and
speaking for many years and provides her audiences with
a wealth of experience and insight on a number of timely
and important topics.
Her
published works include The Family Pregnancy: A Revolutionary
Twelve Month Holistic and Medical
Guide to Maternity. (Donald I. Fine, Inc., 1994); Do
You Have Any Questions? A Woman Doctor Answers the 100
Most Asked Questions in Pregnancy
(Newport Books, 1997); Breaking the Chains the Bind (Newport Books, 2000),
as well as numerous newspaper and magazine articles.
Dr.
Bovo's first book, The Family Pregnancy began gestating
while her own daughter was expecting. At the urging of
her patients and daughter she wrote an innovative
book that answers all of the questions people have, but also teaches moms
and dads to-be how to get in touch with their unborn child.
This is in keeping
with her philosophy that if parents bond with their unborn child, there is
less likelihood
of family abuse.
To
extend her avenues of disseminating information she began
writing fiction. From The Ashes shows the survival of
childhood incest, a still taboo subject,
and the impact it has on the lives that it touches. Taking Chances deals
with victimization at the hands of others and at our own hands, and reveals
how
this can be overcome and self-empowerment can be re-established. Dr. Bovo
believes that people need to learn from each other, and her novels reveal
how relationships
between men and women can flourish instead of flounder. Both books are
complete and currently seeking publication.
Her
recently completed non-fiction book, A Child Betrayed,
which reveals
her personal experience with Child Protective Services. In addition to
documenting her own dealings with "The System", she has spent
hundreds of hours researching and interviewing officials and child experts
and has accumulated
explosive information about these agencies on tape from these interviews.
In the wake of the recent media attention being given to the subject, Dr.
Bovo hopes
that by writing her story she can bring to light the root of the problems
with "The
System" and become a vocal and visible champion for its reform.
