Bowker
Biography:
R. Grace Comyns
I
was born in a small town in central Vermont, the ninth of thirteen
childrenfour girls and nine boys. I left home shortly
after eighth grade graduation, and spent the next four years
attending a Catholic high school in a nearby city. Having decided
not to stay in Vermont and marry some immature idiot as many
of my friends planned to do, I found a job in Connecticut and
married one there. I was blessed with two wonderful children
from that marriage, the first of several.
The second chapter of When
Darla Hit is about my childhood, my incredible mother, and the way she
cared for her oversized family. The rest of the
book is fictional, except for certain historical events
that did, of course, take place. Although Ive written short stories, poetry, and songs
since childhood, this is the first work I have attempted to publish. Whatever
its faults, I take responsibility for every word, and for my humble attempt
to show what I understand to be lifes most important lessons.
After a number of entrepreneurial
ventures in four other states, I finally came home to my beloved Green
Mountain State for good in 2002. My home,
a chalet that my second mom, Doris, named Camp Aerie, is
on the side of one of those mountains. Friends call this place a retreat,
and Im
seldom without guests. I spend much of my time reading,
writing, tending flora, and sometimes shoveling snow. Life is good.
