Biography:
Robet H. Robinson
Robert
H. Robinson, writer and designer of You Kan Do A Kandinsky,
always wanted to be an artist - but there was one drawback.
He couldn't draw.
"With
all the books I produced I would have to hire artists to do
the illustrations," he said.
Except
this one. And ironically it is about one of the greatest artists
of all time and the one who has been credited with inventing
abstraction.
"The
reason I was able to do a Kandinsky was because of Kandinsky
himself," Robinson added. Kandinsky stated, 'I want people
to see finally what lies behind my paintings.'"
And
this he did. He taught about his art and was a prolific writer.
The book containing his complete writings is over nine hundred
pages long. And Robinson was able to study hundreds of his
compositions.
"I
felt very comfortable following his teachings and in moving
the elements (the circles, arcs, triangles) to creat the compositions.
I became like one of his students when he was a teacher during
his Bauhaus years from the early twenties to ealy thirties."
Robinson
did over three hundred original illustrations for the 62 page
book which is composed of extra thick paper and is meant to
be copied and cut up. Robinson says about his book, "If
it's still intact when you're done with it then you haven't
gotten your money's worth."
