Steven
S. Iverson: I have been a student of the martial arts for
over a decade and have always found the subject fascinating.
I initially studied Tae Kwon Do while in college and later
practiced American style boxing. I scoffed at the offer to
practice Judo at the time, not knowing that I would later
regret this decision. These other interests were quickly eclipsed
when the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) burst onto the American
martial arts scene in the early 1990's. With the advent of
the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the success of BJJ
in reality contests, I quickly became an avid BJJ enthusiast.
I felt that there had been an evolution in fighting and that
the traditional stand up arts were neither realistic nor effective
when put to the test. Because there was no BJJ at my university,
I practiced traditional Judo and self-studied BJJ with the
aid of seminars by Rickson Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Rolker Gracie,
Caique and Gustavo Machado to name the most knowledgeable
instructors. I eventually studied pure BJJ when I moved to
Washington, D.C. where I was able to practice gi fighting,
sambo, and submission wrestling. In an effort to continue
learning and convey some of what I had been fortunate enough
to learn through my experiences, I wrote Submission Fighting
Techniques in the winter of 2001/2002.
