Biography:
Jerry Wermund
Jerry
Wermund writes poetry and prose for children about the
earth, nature and our environment. It is, for him, a passion
that jump-started a second "career". His writing
today combines a lifetime love of the outdoors with decades
of experience in his original profession as a geologist
and research scientist.
Published picture books by Wermund include EARTHSCAPES;
Landforms Sculpted by Water, Wind and Ice, and The World
According to Rock. His poetry also appears in two published
anthologies. He has been a member of the Austin chapter of
the Society of Book Writers and Illustrators since 1995.
In addition to his writing, Wermund frequently makes presentations
in Texas elementary schools. He has talked to children about
a variety of topics, including: (1) being a geologist, (2)
rocks, (3) landforms, (4) poetry, and (5) writing and producing
a book.
Wermund holds a BS degree from Franklin and Marshall College
and the Ph.D. in geology from Louisiana State University.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945 and the Army from
1950 to 1952. His professional experience includes being
a geology instructor at LSU, Research Scientist for Mobil
Oil Company, Vice President of Remote Sensing Inc., and Associate
Director/Research Scientist for the Bureau of Economic Geology
at the University of Texas at Austin. He retired from the
latter position in 1998.
Jerry Wermund now lives and writes from his home in Buda,
Texas, where he is active in the Friends of the Buda Library
and assists in the library's summer programs for children.
